About the Volkswagen '1600' EngineOriginally offered from Volkswagen in 1971 for the Type I (Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing) and Type II (Bus), the air-cooled dual-port '1600' (1584cc actual displacement) was the perfect combination of performance, efficiency, and reliability.
With improved carburetion, oiling, and dual-port cylinder head design, the '1600' VW engine proved to be a significant improvement in performance over VW's earlier '1200', '1300', and '1500' single-port engines, while maintaining the high levels of fuel economy and reliability that Volkswagen drivers had grown to expect.
